Crispy Fried Tofu

January 15, 2022

Deep fried tofu is a delicious way to enjoy the healthy soy product, but frying it can be messy, and you have to process it in fairly small batches. Another method that I have found to work very well is battering the tofu cubes in corn starch and baking them in the oven. It takes a little longer, but it is very simple and you can do a large batch at one time.

These cubes are delicious as a snack or appetizer on their own, or you can make them a main dish serving them over rice with some chili sauce or soy sauce.

  • Ingredients

    • 16 oz package tofu
    • 1 tablespoon corn starch
    • 2 tablespoons olive oil
    • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
    • salt
    • peper

    Equipment

    Instructions

    1. Preheat the oven to 400 degrees fahrenheit.
    2. Slice the tofu block into 1 inch thick slices. Arrange them on a dry paper towel and sprinkle with a little bit of salt.
    3. Cover with another layer of paper towels and place a flat, heavy object on top like a butcher block. You want to extract as much excess moisture as possible. Let the tofu sit under the block for about 15 minutes.
    4. Remove the tofu and slice into 1 inch cubes.
    5. Mix the oil, cornstarch, garlic powder, and some black pepper in a large mixing bowl. Gently toss the tofu cubes inthe mixture until it is evenly coated.
    6. Arrange tofu on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. If you have a raised rack it's even better to keep the tofu crispy while excess moisture and oil can drip off onto the parchment.
    7. Bake in the preheated oven for 40 minutes, or until the tofu cubes are crispy and brown. Optionally you can rotate the tofu cubes with tongs to evenly crisp.
    8. Remove and serve immediately.
